Dr. Karl Baum is known as one of the thought leaders in the multiple sclerosis (MS) field. In 1997 he founded the neurological clinic at Hennigsdorf Hospital with the associated MS - Center. Since then, he has held the position of chief of staff.

Dr. Baum studied at the Free University of Berlin, where he received his medical degree and had his dissertation in immunology in 1982. His university career began in 1983, when he became scientific assistant physician at the neurological clinic in the same university.

After specialization in neurology and psychiatry, he became an assistant medical director of the neurological clinic. Working in the scientific field of MS focusing on magnetic resonance imaging, he got his accreditation as a university lecturer (PD) in 1996.

His fields of interest are principally oriented towards the treatment of MS. Dr. Baum has participated as a principal investigator in many studies of immunomodulatory therapy of MS and published several studies as an author. He has given more than 400 lectures about various aspects of MS.

Dr. Baum is an active member of the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Consensus Group (MSTCG). This group is responsible for a regular updating of MS therapy recommendations.
